Nashville-based Visual Artist Ashley Mintz, who also dabbles in poetry and lyric writing and who has always been inspired by her mother’s writing, recently collaborated with her mother, Las Cruces, New Mexico-based writer and photographer Gwendolyn Joyce Mintz on a book titled “Colored Girl.” The book contains fiction and non-fiction stories and poetry by Gwendolyn and is illustrated by Ashley. The imagery and writing in this book encapsulate the stereotypes and struggles of being Black, particularly a Black woman.
Come see the duo read poetry together at the Scarritt Bennett Center in Nashville, Tennessee. Gwendolyn will read from the book, along with previous and newer works. Ashley will read poetry and lyrics inspired by the writings and imagery in the book as well as pieces based on her own experiences being a mixed-race woman.
Admission is free. Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the reading.
