In MTE’s ongoing concern for the health of the members and their families, the annual Washington Youth Tour has been canceled due to the COVID-19 virus. In lieu of the trip, each of the winners will be receiving a $1,000 scholarship.
The Washington Youth Tour Creative Writing Contest is an excellent way to educate our students about electric cooperatives like MTE. The students are given educational materials on a variety of subjects related to electric cooperatives. They then use this information to write essays about how their local cooperative connects communities with power, information and opportunities.
With such a community-based theme, it’s no surprise that the winners usually enjoy meeting students from other communities on the annual trip to Washington, D.C. “The Youth Tour is an incredible opportunity for these students to experience history up close and personal,” says Jay Sanders, community relations coordinator for MTE. “Delegates experience a whirlwind of a week, visiting museums, monuments and other landmarks.”
While we are disappointed that the Washington Youth Tour will not happen this year due to COVID-19, we are proud to provide scholarships to the contest winners. Congratulations to all the winning students and those who participated in the creative writing contest.
